Sa presupunem ca:
- ne-am inregistrat un nume de domeniu (de exemplu domeniu.com sau domeniu.ro)
- am gasit un server pentru gazduire
- am construit site-ul, fisierele aflandu-se pe calculatorul nostru.
Urmatoarea etapa este upload-ul site-ului pe server. Cu alte cuvinte transferul fisierelor care compun site-ul de pe calculatorul nostru pe serverul web.
FTP - File Transport Protocol este protocolul folosit pentru upload-ul si download-ul fisierelor pe si de pe un server.

Upload-ul poate fi facut in trei moduri, folosind:
- comenzi FTP specifice introduse de la tastatura similare celor MS-DOS
- un software specializat numit client FTP, sau
- pagina web de administrare a contului la adresa indicata de adminstratorul serverului

Prima metoda, cea a utilizarii comenzilor FTP, nu prea mai este folosita deoarece implica cunoasterea acestora spre deosebire de celelalte doua la care modul de operare este grafic.

Clientul FTP este un software care va deschide o sesiune (conexiune) tip FTP, pe portul 21, intre calculatorul local si serverul FTP.

Pentru configurarea clientului FTP se folosesc datele furnizate de administratorul serverului de gazduire:
FTP Host Address - poate fi un numele serverului FTP sau adresa IP a acestuia
FTP Site Username - nume utilizator folosit pentru autentificare
FTP Site Password - parola folosit pentru autentificare
FTP Site Connection Port - portul 21
Loging Type - Normal
Transfer Type - de preferat Auto-detect

Clientii FTP, indiferent de producator, au o interfata grafica asemanatoare avand 5 zone distincte:
- Parametrii necesari conexiunii (zona 1)
- Local Panel (fisierele aflate pe calculatorul local - zona 2)
- Remote Panel (fisierele aflate pe serverul web in directorul corespunzator domeniului nostru - zona 3)
- Log Panel (lista mesajelor de la calculatorul local si raspunsurile de la serverul FTP - zona 4)
- Queue Panel (lista fisierelor trimise si primite - zona 5)
Aceste zone sunt evidentiate in imaginea de mai jos in cadrul clientului FTP FileZilla.
Utilizarea este simpla, facem clic dreapta pe fisierul dorit selectand din meniu operatia dorita (de exemplu upload, download).

Exemple de clienti FTP: CuteFTP, SmartFTP sau variantele gratuite FileZilla si WS FTP LE.

Pentru transferul fisierelor folosind pagina web de administrare a contului accesati pictograma File Manager. Fisierele se vor upload-a in directorul public_html de pe serverul web. Aceasta metoda se preteaza cand transferam putine fisiere deoarece implica citeva operatii care se executa pentru fiecare fisier in parte.

Pentru transferarea mai multor fisiere sau unui site intreg este recomandat folosirea unui client FTP astfel putand-se selecta simultan si trimite multe fisiere.
