nu cu mult timp in urma, datorita reduse la care lucrau coolerul nu reprezenta pentru posesorii deNu cu mult timp in urma, datorita frecventelor reduse la care lucrau procesoarele, coolerul nu reprezenta pentru posesorii de calculatoare decat o simpla componenta, necesara racirii procesorului. Odata cu aparitia noilor generatii de procesoare si posibilitatea de overclock, problema racirii procesorului a devenit o vitala in stabilitatea si buna functionare a calculatoarelor. Temperaturile in continua crestere ale noilor procesoare au nevoie de sisteme de racire cat mai performante, acest lucru conducand la o dezvoltare nebanuita a coolerelor. Coolerele moderne trebuie sa faca fata unor temperaturi ridicate de miile de megahertzi si performantele noilor procesoare. Tehnologia computerelor s-a dezvoltat atat de mult incat in sistemele moderne nu numai procesoarele necesita racire, ci si alte chipseturi cum ar fi cele ale placilor de baza si ale celor video. Coolerele pot fi impartite in doua categorii similare categoriilor de utilizatori care le folosesc. O categorie este cea a utilizatorilor obisnuiti pentru care coolerul nu reprezinta decat o componenta ce ''se invarte'' in calculator, iar cea de a doua este cea a celor impatimiti de overclocking, ce vor sa ''stoarca'' si ultima picatura din resursele calculatorului. In esenta, performanta unui cooler depinde de multi factori, printre care materialul din care este facut radiatorul, marimea si turatia ventilatorului, arhitectura in care este construit. Marimea si materialul constructiv (aluminiu sau cupru) este important in puterea de racire pe care o ofera coolerul. Dar marimea lui pune uneori probleme utilizatorului, dimensiunile coolerului putand sa ''deranjeze'' componentele alaturate de pe placa de baza. Mentionam ca si noi ne-am lovit de aceasta problema, unele coolere punand probleme la montare deoarece a trebuit sa le ''inghesuim'' intre condensatorii electrolitici aflati langa socketul procesorului. Marimea si turatia ventilatorului sunt un alt factor important in eficienta unui cooler. Dar, datorita turatiilor tot mai mari ale ventilatoarelor, silentiozitatea coolerelor a avut de suferit, ea incercand sa fie rezolvata prin marirea palelor ventilatorului si prin scaderea turatiei. Majoritatea coolerelor din test au fost dotate cu variator de turatie, cu ajutorul caruia se poate modifica manual turatia ventilatorului, dand libertate utilizatorului sa aleaga intre silentiozitate si o racire riguroasa a procesorului. De asemenea, modificarea manuala a turatiei este de mare ajutor celor ce isi overclock-eaza procesorul si in cazul in care temperatura ambianta nu este constanta. Odata cu dezvoltarea industriei coolerelor si pretul acestora a avut de suferit. Daca un cooler ''modest'' se situeaza in jurul pretului de 5-6 euro, un cooler performant poate ajunge la pretul de 20 – 30 euro. Aflati in era overclocking-ului, mai ales in cazul procesoarelor AMD temperatura procesorului poate atinge valori foarte mari si trebuie scazuta pentru o functionare fara erori a sistemului. Nici acest aspect nu le-a scapat producatorilor, la test fiind prezente coolere cat mai sofisticate, avand in dotare variator manual al turatiei si racire a radiatorului cu lichid ca in cazul coolerelor Cooler-Pro de la Gigabyte, Twin Cooler de la Thermal Integration Technology sau Water Cooler produs de Titan. Oferta coolerelor este atat de variata incat multi isi pun intrebarea cum isi pot alege coolerul ce li se potriveste. Sigur, in alegerea unui cooler trebuie tinut cont in primul rand de performante, deoarece ele sunt cele mai importante, dar nu este necesar sa ne ''aruncam'' la un cooler supradimensionat daca nu este adecvat. Pentru fiecare cooler exista specificatii pentru ce tip si model de procesor este conceput. Daca nu sunteti adeptul overclocking-ului va este suficient un cooler ale carui specificatii, notate in manual sau pe cutia acestuia, corespund procesorului pe care il detineti. in cazul in care doriti sa va overclock-ati procesorul trebuie sa alegeti un cooler mai performant, cu dezavantajul ca pretul acestuia este mai ridicat, iar marimea si puterea consumata sunt mai mari. Avand in vedere ca odata cu cresterea performantelor componentelor ce alcatuiesc un computer si puterea consumata de acestea a crescut, un calculator de ''top'' va necesita o sursa de alimentare mai puternica.
